Our apple picking excursion in North Georgia was a fun experience, exploring a variety of apples. It got us thinking about different ways apple can be incorporated in everyday foods besides eating as a fruit.
Here is the second item from our apple offerings: Apple Pepper Relish.
A relish is a sweet and spicy spread that can be used as a salsa or a dip. Usually sugar is added to most relishes to enhance the sweet notes. In our relish we use mejdul dates. Our sweet, fresh picked apples combined with crunchy red and green peppers along with a single homegrown habanero pepper makes this relish an addictive side with just tortilla chips or pita chips. The fruit is cooked in apple cider vinegar which acts as a natural preservative and provides the sour note. Have it with a simple toast for breakfast, the distinguishable tastes of sweet, sour and spicy will linger in your mouth for a long time.
