Here are some flavorful and flaky biscuits or rolls which can be whipped up any day of the week and makes it to the table in about 30 minutes or so. It takes about 5-10 minutes to mix the batter and scoop out the rolls. Takes 20-25 minutes to bake them – DONE! 

During our recent visit to India we enjoyed a multitude of delicious delicacies not just from Indian cuisine but all around the world. We enjoyed different regional food and plenty of “indianized” versions of international staples. 

One such offering I saw advertised on billboards was Tulsi Turmeric bread. Immediately intrigued by the idea, I thought why not try them out as dinner rolls or biscuits and serve them as a side for soup. BINGO! 

Tulsi is similar to basil probably with a milder aroma and intense taste. I substituted tulsi with Thai Basil and used fresh Turmeric root. 

Take a large mixing bowl and add the ingredients one by one and mix. Scoop out rolls and bake. It is an extremely easy recipe. The flavor profiles of these biscuits are unique and will definitely make you keep going for more. 

Customize these by adding fresh vegetables into the mix – corn will work very well. Sprinkle cheese or seasoning on top. Options are never-ending 😀

I am definitely trying a zucchini stuffed one next! 

I served these with my robust barley soup. It was the perfect vehicle to dip into the soup and slurp.

GLUTEN-FREE OPTION – replace whole wheat flour with gluten-free baking flour

VEGAN OPTION – replace buttermilk with non-dairy milk + lemon juice

Basil Turmeric biscuits

Here are some flavorful and flaky biscuits or rolls which can be whipped up any day of the week. Delicious and satisfying.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients –

  • 2 cups Whole Wheat flour
  • 2 tbsps Baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp Baking soda
  • 1 tbsp Thai Basil cut into ribbons
  • 1 tbsp Turmeric root grated
  • Salt

Wet Ingredients –

  • 1 1/2 cups Buttermilk liquid consistency
  • 1/2 cup Olive oil

Instructions

  • Mix all the dry ingredients together
  • Make a well in the middle, add buttermilk and keep mixing
    Add maple syrup (optional) 
    Finally add olive oil and combine to get a fluffy batter
    (Depending on the consistency of the buttermilk used, you may need to loosen with water or thicken with flour as needed) 
  • Grease an ice cream scooper with oil, scoop out the batter and lay them on a parchment paper lined baking sheet
    Sprinkle parmesan cheese on top (optional) 
  • Bake at 450 degrees hot oven for 12 minutes – until tops are light golden 
  • Turn off oven and leave inside for 3 more minutes
  • Remove from oven and rest on counter for 5 minutes 
  • Serve warm with soup of choice
