Chia and Cacao melange

It was a night to celebrate midweek and we wanted to whip up a healthy and quick dessert. My younger one started to rummage my written down recipe book – I have always jotted down recipes when I try out new things. He chanced upon a pudding recipe written down eons ago.  He goes – “Amma – we need to try out things from this book, you have a lot of yummy notes “ …. Well said !!! 

We got down to assembling the ingredients – basically has only 4 – chia seeds, raw cacao powder, dates and milk. Flavor it with choice of cinnamon, orange or vanilla – just about anything goes. Sweetened with date – this makes it wholesome and healthy. Why not have it for breakfast ? Absolutely can 🙂 

Make a smooth date paste – add as many dates as the sweetness levels you desire. 

Add the cacao powder – again as chocolaty as you prefer. 

Lastly mix the chia and done ! 

Put this in little cups or jars and refrigerate overnight. 

The chia seeds absorb the goodness and becomes soft. The easy peasy dessert is ready. 

My older one tasted it and said – this is a poor man’s chocolate mousse…. Interesting comment, but why a poor man … lets make it a lazy woman’s chocolate mousse 🙂 

It is a creamy dessert, with pieces of chia giving it a unique texture, not to mention the rich calcium that comes along for the ride 😇 

Chia and Cacao melange recipe

Ingredients – Makes 4 of 4 oz jars 

  • Dates – 24
  • Cacao powder – 1/4 cup
  • Chia seeds – 1/4 cup
  • Milk – 1 cup 
  • Cinnamon powder – 1/4 tsp 

Procedure –

  1. Make a smooth date paste in a blender with milk 
  2. Add the cacao powder, cinnamon powder and blend again to mix thoroughly
  3. Finally add chia seeds and give it just a spin, taking care not to crush the chia completely
  4. Fill in small 4 oz jars leaving space for chia to expand and refrigerate overnight
