Apple Crumble

Apple picking in North Georgia is a fun activity. In about 1.5 hours from Atlanta, there are many Apple farms which allow visitors to pick apples. Our Saturday activity this week was Apple picking ! The picking prices are per the size of bag you choose, ½ peck, 1 peck and a bushel. We got ourselves several small size bags so each of us could pick individually. The walk up to the apple orchards was about ½ mile with an up and down gradient, so we also got our exercise for the day ! We picked a variety of apples ranging from Pink Lady to Golden Delicious. We were well organized and filled our bags one at a time, picking almost 40 altogether. These apples were so fresh and crisp that you could pick an apple off and directly eat it.

This apple picking experience inspired us to make an assortment of delicious creations from these apples, so over the next few weeks, you will see recipes made with our fresh picked apples. Here is the first one – Apple Crumble.

Apple crumble has been one our signature desserts to take to our Annual Diwali and Thanksgiving get together. The sweet teenagers in our group always looked forward to the Apple Crumble and it was indeed our pleasure to treat the kids.

Apple crumble is a dessert where the apple takes centerstage with very limited accompaniments, thus making the freshness of apples standout. Apples are cooked in warm spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg along with Maple Syrup. The top crumble can be just a thin covering with nuts, oats and some whole wheat flour to give a crunchy topping to the soft apples. Warm Apple Crumble with a scoop of vanilla icecream is a perfect dessert for Cold season celebrations.
